Concrete resurfacing puts a new surface on the concrete you already have. We clean and profile the old slab, then spread a cement based overlay over it, roughly 1/16 to 1/2 inch thick. We do this work across Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, Apache Junction and Gold Canyon. Driveways, patios, walkways, porches, steps, pool decks and RV pads all take it well. The finish can be broom textured, troweled smooth, colored through the mix, or stamped to a pattern. Snow is not a factor here, so we work year round.
An overlay needs a slab that is sound, still and draining. Surface wear, light scaling, discoloration, flaking and a finish you never liked all fit. Hairline cracks get opened up, cleaned and filled before anything goes down. A slab that has heaved, settled or cracked clean through is a different job, because the movement underneath comes back up through any new layer. That one gets torn out and repoured, which is our concrete repair and replacement service. We read the slab, the joints and the drainage, then tell you which one you have.

We read the slab first: the joints, the cracks, the drainage, how sound the surface feels. Prep is most of the job. The slab gets pressure washed, and product data sheets call for 2500 to 3000 psi to pull off dirt, old sealer and loose material. A hard troweled or coated surface gets ground or scarified instead. Manufacturers point at the International Concrete Repair Institute profiles, commonly CSP 3 to CSP 5. Cracks get widened, cleaned and filled, then a bond coat or primer goes down.
The overlay goes on with a squeegee, a trowel or a gauge rake. A cement based resurfacer builds from a feather edge up to about 1/2 inch, in lifts no thicker than 1/4 inch each. A stampable overlay is placed heavier, 1/4 to 3/4 inch, so it holds a pattern. We finish it broom textured, troweled smooth or stamped while it is workable, and we carry the existing control and expansion joints straight through. Then it cures wet for a day or two before anything touches it.
Three things decide it. The slab has to be sound, so not flaking, spalling or crumbling under the top. It has to sit still, with no settling, no heaving and no crack edge riding higher than the other side. And water has to run off, because an overlay over a low spot still holds the puddle. One manufacturer states it plainly: no system should go over concrete that is flaking or spalling. Published trade guidance adds that resurfacing is not feasible on concrete that is heaving or severely cracked.
A slab that fails those checks needs tear out and a fresh pour. Resurfacing does not reach what is under the concrete. Soil movement, a washed out base or a root under the corner keeps working, and the crack telegraphs up through the new layer in a season or two. Manufacturers say reflective cracking cannot be completely prevented where a slab settles or lacks control joints. When your slab reads that way we say so, and the question becomes whether to repair or replace the concrete.
These products carry a temperature window, and Phoenix summer sits outside it. One widely sold resurfacer calls for air and concrete surface temperatures of 50 to 90 degrees. A stampable overlay data sheet gives 50 to 85 degrees for air, and another asks 50 to 90 degrees for air and substrate through the first two days. Surface temperature is the part people miss. NASA mapped Phoenix pavement at 120 degrees and up on a June day in 2024, near 140 at Sky Harbor. A slab that hot pulls water out of an overlay before it can bond.
So we schedule around it. Fall through spring the window is open most of the day. In summer we start early to beat the heat, working before the sun loads the slab. Monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30, and storms build fast. One resurfacer asks for rain protection for at least 8 hours, and a stampable overlay data sheet asks for no precipitation during placement or for the next two days. We watch the forecast and move the date rather than risk a fresh overlay.
A broom finish is the workhorse on a driveway or a walkway. It leaves light texture underfoot, hides normal wear and matches most East Valley flatwork. A troweled smooth finish reads cleaner and suits a covered porch or a patio under a roof. Integral color mixes pigment into the overlay, so the color runs through the layer instead of sitting on top. A stamped overlay presses a pattern into a thicker layer, 1/4 to 3/4 inch, and gives plain concrete a stone, brick or tile texture.
